San Diego’s May Fires—The Economic and Personal Side of Tragedy

By: Dr. Lynn Reaser

Image Although it is only May, an early appearance of Santa Ana winds has already ignited a rash of fires in San Diego County, imperiling thousand of individuals in their paths.  What will be the ultimate economic impact?

Fortunately, property loss and the fires’ duration have been limited.  The 2003 and 2007 fires disrupted activity in October and November but were followed by recoveries in December through February as insurance funds were dispersed and rebuilding ensued.  State and local finances will be further strained by fire-fighting resources likely to be needed during the next several months.

Despite being spared from much greater devastation, the fires’ impacts go beyond economics as one understands the personal side of tragedy, including the fear and trauma imposed on all those affected.

Our prayers go out for all of those impacted, especially those who totally lost their homes.
